The Lost Girls Movement

Finding our way back to ourselves and each other

Who

Meet the creators of The Lost Girls.

What

The Lost Girls is an idea that's become a book, then a stageplay, and now a movement, written in poetry slam-style character monologue and designed to be performed by junior high and high school students across the nation...and the world!

Why

Results from the CDC's 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey show startling trends. Nearly 3 in 5 teen girls (57%) said they felt "persistently sad or hopeless." That's the highest rate in a decade. And 30% said they have seriously considered dying by suicide — a percentage that's risen by nearly 60% over the past 10 years.(Feb 13, 2023.) The Lost Girls addresses the isolation created by social media and offers our youth a way back to genuine connections and healthy self-value.

How

The Lost Girls is a raw, emotional journey into the hearts and minds of seven teenagers as they grapple with the challenges of surviving modern adolescence. In our fractured world, where social media has made us more isolated than bringing us together, The Lost Girls Movement maps out a path back to real human connection, not just for our youth, but for us all.

When & Where

The Lost Girls will be officially launched on May 1st, 2025, and will be performed on stage for the very first time that month in Pine Mountain Club, CA. Following this opening night performance, we will be taking The Lost Girls on the road to introduce the play to junior highs and high schools nation and world-wide.

Creating Performing Arts with a Purpose

The Lost Girls is a book that is also a screenplay, written in the popular genre of "poetry slam." Each character is onstage alone, thought-streaming aloud. The audience journeys into their minds and hearts as they navigate through the perils of adolescence, the dangers of social media isolation, and the journey back to genuine connectivity with themselves and their friends.

Educating Teens on the Dangers of Social Media

Social media connects us, but it also isolates us.

The Lost Girls demonstrates how easily we can get caught up in social media without realizing how isolating and dangerous it can be to our mental health.

What We Are Fighting For

Group of Friends

Increase Awareness

We hope to increase awareness within our schools about how social media can negatively impact our mental health.

Our Goals

To replace the isolation and self-judgment created by social media with genuine intrapersonal and interpersonal connections that support our teens' mental health.

Learning through Art

We hope to provide a memorable and impactful experience through poetry, performance, and theater as a way to deliver our message.

Provide Solutions

We hope to demonstrate just how real connections with our friends, family, and ourselves can keep us emotionally and mentally strong.

Volunteer Opportunities

We welcome anyone who feels passionate about our project and would like to contribute their ideas, help us reach schools in their region, or are interested in being a Lost Girls Ambassador, traveling to schools to assist in creating the play.

The Lost Girls Creators

The Lost Girls was conceptualized by Elisa Fortise Christensen and written with Lauren Fredericks, her 14-year-old co-author. The book was illustrated by Megan Monroe.

The Lost Girls was written not just for adolescent girls but for everyone who has experienced feelings of increased isolation and loneliness, depression and self-doubt, as a result of social media.

As much as the Internet has brought us, it has created an equal or larger amount of disfunction. Teaching our youth how to manage this resource in a way that will allow them to protect their mental health is crucial.
